Cheese Sandwich (1889) on Sandwiches of History
Sure, the name Cheese Sandwich, may not be inspiring. But fret not lest ye be fretted for Aunt Babette’s Cook Book of 1889 is gonna let it basic. Nope. There TWO kinds of bread not to mention TWO spreads inside. So, take that, boring sandwich name.

Domino Sandwich Number 2 (1936) on Sandwiches of History
Переглядів 6 тис.2 години тому
It makes sense that 1,001 Sandwiches of 1936 would have a section on novelty sandwiches. I mean, 1,001 sandwiches is a lot! Today, we’re taking on the Domino Sandwich Number 2 which, I have to say, is way better than Domino Sandwich Number 1 (just kidding, I haven’t made that one yet). It’s pretty straightforward if not tasty. Pre-order your copy of Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook! www.amaz...
Sweet and Savory Sardine Sandwich (our history) on Sandwiches of History

Time for another sandwich of our history and today we are making one provided by Salem watches on UA-cam about how is grandpa used to make this. I cannot express enough how shocked I was at the outcome. When I first read the ingredients involved I thought there was no way this would get anywhere near ok let alone tasty. Well, it just goes to show ya, staying curious has its perks. And if you’re...
Pimento and Asparagus Sandwich (1917) on Sandwiches of History
Переглядів 7 тис.7 годин тому
Like the classic combo of peanut butter and jelly, finally, the great taste asparagus meets the sweet goodness of pimento! What? That’s not a thing? Hmm, I severally misread the room here. At any rate this light little tea sandwich from Salads and Sandwiches of 1917 has spared us the use of canned asparagus. And for that I am immensely grateful. Frankfurter and Chili Sauce Sandwich (1951) on Sandwiches of History
Переглядів 8 тис.9 годин тому
I have to say, naming your cookbook The Lunch Box and Every Kind of Sandwich takes some audacity. Every kind of sandwich?! Ok, if you say so. At any rate, today we’re taking on the rather transparently named Frankfurter and Chili Sauce Sandwich. There is a third ingredient not in the name which actually adds some zing so they kept some of the mystery alive. Pre-order your copy of Sandwiches of ...
Ghughra Sandwich: Double Cheese Gujarati Style (India) on Sandwiches of History
Переглядів 9 тис.12 годин тому
For International Sandwich Sunday today, we are headed to India for the Ghughra Sandiwch. More specifically, the double cheese Gujarati style. This sandwich, like almost all Indian food, promises to be packed with flavor. And because it is street food, it’s also going to have a slight unhealthy aspect. Which, of course makes it more delicious. I know I could have probably bought the green chutn...
Chicago Club (1909) on Sandwiches of History
Переглядів 14 тис.14 годин тому
Nothing in the recipe for the Chicago Club from The Up-To-Date Sandwich Book of 1909, screams Chicago to me. It does use two different types of bread. But both would’ve been readily available in any big city. On the plus side, there aren’t humdinger ingredients like the Milwaukee Club I did a while back (different book) that called for fried oysters (delicious but whaaaat?) Also, many will noti...
Sardine Loaf Sandwich (1936) on Sandwiches of History

I think I speak for all of us when I say sometimes we have leftover sardines, hardboiled eggs, and mashed potatoes hanging around and are flummoxed on what to do. Well fret not lest ye be fretted for Florence A. Cowels, author of 1936’s 1,001 Sandwich has the answer! It’s the Sardine Loaf Sandwich. Yay. Want to check out the latest In The Chips with Barry? George Sandwich (1905) on Sandwiches of History
Переглядів 9 тис.19 годин тому
Today we’re cracking open what appears to be a British cookbook of yore. The name of the sandwich, George Sandwich, might be a clue. But the fact that there is a “u” in Salads, Sandwiches, and Savouries and that the cover says the price is “one shilling” are, in fact, much bigger clues. This sandwich uses a combo of meats that doesn’t sound unpleasant in the least. And it adds a third ingredien...
Roast Beef Sandwich with Anchovy Paste (1912) on Sandwiches of History
Переглядів 7 тис.21 годину тому
I know what you’re thinking, someone finally made roasted beef tolerable by adding anchovy paste. I am with you. Not. My hope (because apparently I don’t learn) for the Roast Beef Sandwich with Anchovy Paste from The Chafing-Dish published in 1912, was that the ratio of anchovy paste to beef might be ok. It wasn’t. But rather than binning it, I decided to save it. Did I succeed? Let us be the o...
Midnight Feast (1941) on Sandwiches of History

When you name sandwich the Midnight Feast like 1941’s 500 Tasty Sandwiches did, you had better bring it. I mean, it’s got feast in the name. Well, turns out not only was this sandwich a double decker, it did have interesting flavors going on. Personally, I thought the third slice of bread was a bit much but what do I know? If the multi-day excursion that was yesterday’s Kumru sandwich from Turkey was too much of a journey for you, then you’ll really enjoy the epic simplicity of today’s Frankfurt Sausage Sandwich from The Up-To-Date Sandwich Book of 1909. Kumru (Turkey) on Sandwiches of History
Переглядів 8 тис.День тому
Today is International Sandwich Sunday and we are headed to Turkey to make the Kumru. While I was able to find the sausage for this sandwich, finding kasseri, a sheep’s milk cheese proved a bit more difficult. Fortunately, the European market where I found the sausage had Kaşkaval which I understand to be a similar sheep’s milk cheese. As for finding the bread, no way. So I tried my hand at bak...

The Meat and Potato Sandwich from Miss Parloa’s New Cook Book of 1882 sure sound hearty, don’t it? Yeah, um, about that…it is…but it also lacks a certain ingredient found in most sandwiches that would make it even heartier. You know what, you’ll see what I mean. Coming soon-ish? Sandwich of History: LIVE!
I have lemon juice and salt in my beer right now and it works great. Also, I ran out of my usual lime salt. Happy weekend sandwich meister, from Trescott Maine!
Who woulda thunk?
We need more sandwiches with two types of bread. Why not? We put two types of cheese or meat on a sandwich? I think i’ve had a club sandwich where the middle is rye.
Domino Sandwich Number 72.6 is the GSOAT. Don’t make the mistake of making the 72.0 version because it’s vastly inferior.
Interesting… I eat something called cannibal sandwiches at Christmas parties every year as a Wisconsinite, but this is slightly different than the cannibal sandwich I know. The way we do it is one slice of pumpernickel bread (so technically not a sandwich lol) with ground beef, sliced onions, and salt and pepper. Interesting to know it’s that old!
For one glorious moment, I thought the drink of water at the beginning was the start of a ventriloquist act.
10/10 plus ups today!
It was crying out for Branston Pickle.
What brand of dill pickles do you use? They look better than the pickles I’m buying now.
sliced green olives…
A Monte Coho?
This sandwich definitely had cheese in it
0:31 I appreciate how your phone decided this shot needed a Dutch angle
I always look forward to the intro to the video! 😂
Plussed up? That's a whole different sandwich at this point. lol. Also, regarding the beginning of the video: Water you doing? :) Although this does open up a WHOLE new frontier for "What is Barry pretending to be in the middle of doing when he starts the video now?" lol …and then I'm waiting for the "Oh, hi, didn't see you there. Hey, how long HAVE you been there? ARE YOU STALKING ME? HELP HELP SOMEONE CALL THE POLICE" one. Although I suppose that might be a bit much.
Sorta sandwich I would make at 3am because of the munchies. Yum.
May I share a sandwich of my own devising? It consists of slices of elk summer sausage (no beef filler), on rye bread with a thin smear of cream cheese and a dusting of fresh chopped chives on the inside of both slices. I call it Uncle Johnny, after my uncle that supplied the sausage that was made from his annual hunt.
I love raw meat, but im ambivalent about making it a sandwich.😋idk, id try it. Just used to it without bread.
Is there someone here who can tell me how to suggest a sandwich to Berry? He doesn't respond to my comments, so I must be doing something wrong.
Good crunch on that plus up! Simple yet decadent
I just found your channel and I'm glad you don't spend an hour talking about how the sandwich was created. I love short to the point videos.
It looks hard to go arye with that sandwich.
Sounds like a Cole slaw sandwich. Too weird, even for me.
tomato slab, salt and pepper.... DANG. I was sure I was right on this one...
That's a fine looking sandwich. I know we all saw the grilled cheese treatment coming. Mayo makes for a better crust in my opinion, but butter just tastes better for grilled cheese, buuuuuuuut, since there was butter inside I totally approve of your use of mayo in this case. I've never actually had pickles in a grilled cheese (I'll try it soon!), though I sometimes add a few slices of raw onion which is really nice (they mellow out just enough during cooking. Try it!).
EVOO works great for grilling a sangweege.
I bet that you were gonna plus it up with the Chilled Grease treatment, and I lost my life savings.
This adumbrates the Toas-tite of the 1950s. It made round, toasted sandwiches out of loaf bread with any fillings--grilled cheese to ersatz apple pie! The are making the device again!
TIL "adumbrates", thank you. Nice word! Will steal and use :) Arguably the Toas-tite of the 1950s adumbrated the Uncrustable monstrosities of modern times. lol
Round about way to get to a grill cheese.
I’d say this is more accurately called an egg salad sandwich.
Looks like an amazing tea sandwich, I'll have to give it a try. Never thought to change up the bread like they did.
The rounds were for fancy Victorian ladies. EVERYTHING is a tea sandwich for Victorian girls.
Sometimes only the grilled cheese treatment will do…
Guessed 6.5. I'm telling you. I'm never to far off.
call me crazy but i think some kimchi would've made for an interesting plus us. would've added the same brineyness as the pickles but a but more texture and a touch of heat.
I LOVE KIMCHI It's really good with a polish dog.
@@tiki_trash Oh, man. Now you've got me craving. Still bummed that Costco got rid of the polish dog...
@@tiki_trash oh man. I'm a polish dog purist and usually go with just mustard, but i think i might have to try some kimchi on that jawn asap
Kimchi is the bomb! If it's greasy put some kimchi onit.
now you talking....that is a great sandwich
I half expected to hear "Let's add a dill pickle spear" :)
Best plus up of all time!
Thank you
Why do I feel this recipe was written by someone who only had one slice of rye bread left from their loaf so had to get creative?
Making virtue of necessity! 😉
I love this sandwich!!!
Hell yeah, glad we know Barry hydrates.
i was gulping water when i started the video and to suddenly see Barry doing the same was a spiritual experience.
With the various forms of anchovies in the sandwiches, he’d have mummified by now without proper hydration! 😂
I finally got a "I think you know what's coming next" right!
I know it's adding meat to a vegetarian sandwich, but I really think you could have gotten away with adding ham or pastrami, even turkey to this and I think all of the flavors would have gone really seamless. Actually without the meat, I wonder if the brineyness from the pickle might actually take over the cheese a little bit.
Needs black pepper! But seriously, I think this is the first time it WAS predictable what you were gonna do
I'll bet this blew em away in 1889!"Two types of bread!Mustard AND butter!Well I'll be dipped" they might have said. But giving it the "grilled cheese treatment" would have REALLY done it!
If you brought these to tea-time back then, all the other ladies would be floored.
ORDINARY SAUSAGE COLLAB WHEN
Oh oh that sounds fun
Now hold on, does Barry make a sausage sandwich? Or does ordinarysausage make a sandwich sausage?
@@axdntprn I think Ordinary sausage makes some horrible sausage that sandwiches of history turns into a sandwich, pluses up, then it returns to sausage form. This cycle continues over the course of a 24 hour live stream.
Need a bowl of tomato soup with that. Yes. I know this represents project creep.
mustard and cheese is my favourite grilled cheese combo, good job on the plus up as well, gotta love a crisp
I also do mustard and cheese for grilled cheese! high fiving you
Might frying the slices of the loaf in butter, a bit like 'bubble and squeak' improve it?
